“In the worship of security we fling ourselves beneath the wheels of routine – and before we know it our lives are gone.” – Sterling Hayden, Wanderer
“Love is a verb”
Tenacious, resourceful, and funny, a significant driving force behind Joyce’s life is a feeling of freedom and self-reliance. After ten years working in environmental politics, Joyce turned to entrepreneurship where she started a dog daycare and boarding business. After several cross-country moves with her husband, and always with as many dogs as possible, the couple settled back in Portland.
Through a life filled with change, she is most proud of her ability to roll with the punches – to be flexible in plans and goals without compromising her priorities and values. Maintaining a positive attitude throughout her life has been critical in navigating the ups and downs that life brings. Joyce has found education, critical thinking, empathy, and civility to be constant values present throughout her life.
Joyce has felt most confident throughout her life while learning and preparing for her careers in psychology, public administration, entrepreneurship, and caregiving. Joyce loves the better understanding of self that getting older brings.
